What We Believe
Statement of Faith
Concerning the Bible and Its Inspiration
The Bible is the inspired, infallible, inerrant, holy word of the Living God. All of the Bible can and should be used for doctrine and teaching in the church. 2 Peter 1:20-21 clearly tells us that the Scriptures came from the moving of the Holy Ghost on the writers. Here we have a clear statement and claim that God inspired the Bible. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says the scriptures will make us “throughly furnished” meaning that the Scriptures give us all we need to know how to live right in the sight of God.
Concerning the King James Version
At Newton Baptist, we have standardized on the Authorized King James Version of the Bible and hold it to be the most accurate and proven (for over 400 years) translation for English speaking people.. Although service attendees are welcome to carry other translations as study helps or for cross reference, the King James Version alone is relied on as our given translation of God's Holy Word and stands as the only authority. We believe God is NOT the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33) and have therefore set a standard translation for use in all services, teaching, and preaching in accordance with His word.
Concerning God
God is the eternal, holy, and triune God of all creation. There is no other God but Him (Deuteronomy 6:4; 1 Kings 8:59-60). He is in three persons: The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, yet He is one. Jesus said that He and His Father “are one” in John 10:30. He is omnipotent (all powerful, Matthew 19:26, Matthew 28:18), omnipresent (all places at once, Psalm 139:7-16), and omniscient (all knowing, Psalm 139:1-6, Psalm 147:5, Proverbs 15:3). God created all living and all that exists. He created man and gave him dominion over this earth and the ability to procreate to fill the earth. God is the creator of this world and all living creatures (Genesis 1:20-21). God is the designer of human life and man was created by Him in His image (Genesis 1:26-27). God is the giver of life (John 1:4). What man knows of God’s nature is that He is holy and that He shows both mercy and grace to man (1 Peter 1:15, Ephesians 2:8).
Concerning Christ Jesus
Jesus Christ is the only begotten son of God. He is God in all ways as the second person of the Godhead trinity (Philippians 2:5). He was immaculately conceived and virgin born (Luke 1:26-27, 31; Matthew 1:23). He walked upon this earth performing miracles, teaching salvation through repentance, and ultimately was crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind and sealed our redemption through His literal, physical, bodily resurrection. He rose from the dead on the third day to conquer death, hell, and the grave (Luke 24:46). He ascended to the Father with the promise of returning for his bride, the Church (John 14:1-3; Acts 1:9-11, 1 Thessalonians 4:13). Jesus will call for His bride and rapture His church prior to the tribulation.
Concerning the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit, also known as the Holy Ghost, is the third person of the Godhead trinity (Hebrews 9:14; 1 Corinthians 2:10-11). The Holy Spirit is God in all ways and was present at creation (Genesis 1:2). The Holy Spirit is the way in which God indwells Christians today (John 7:38-39; Acts 7:55; John 20:22). He reproves the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:7). He gives us the mind of Christ and understanding of the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 2:10-16). He aids in our infirmities (Romans 8:26) and shows us how to walk (Romans 8:1-9).
Concerning Man & Sin
Man was created by God in His own image. Man was made without sin, but was given freewill. God placed man as keeper and ruler of the earth (Genesis 1:26). God created man to have a choice whether to love Him or not. God made man as an eternal being with a soul that will, after this life, spend eternity in either heaven or hell (Genesis 2:7; Daniel 12:2). Man fell from his original sinless position (Genesis 3:17-19) in the Garden of Eden. When man sinned, sin was passed unto all generations through one man’s sin (Romans 5:12). The penalty for sin against God is death (Genesis 2:17; Romans 6:23). The Bible tells us that all have sinned (Romans 3:23).
Concerning Salvation
Salvation is the free gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. It comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). True faith requires repentance (Acts 3:19). Once we have salvation, it is eternal, never to be lost. Since salvation is not purchased by man’s works, it cannot be kept by man’s works. It is kept by God who gave it to us (John 10:27-29). We grow in our salvation from babes in Christ to mature Christians (2 Peter 3:18). We are justified by the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Acts 13:39; Romans 3:24,28) and He provided the atonement for our sins (Romans 5:11). Salvation is the freedom (being saved) from the eternal punishment of sins through and by the blood of Jesus Christ.
Concerning Satan and Demons
Satan is the angel known as Lucifer, fallen from heaven (Isaiah 14:12-15). He wanted to take God’s position and was jealous of God. Through this rebellion, he was cast out of heaven down to earth. He is the prince and power of the air in this world (Ephesians 2:2), but is limited by God (Job 1:12). He is evil and wicked (Matthew 13:38-39). He is the father of lies and a murderer (John 8:44). He is the tempter (Matthew 4:3) and is presently seeking who he can devour (1 Peter 5:8). When Satan fell, one third of the angels, called demons, fell with him (Revelation 12:4) and they presently follow Satan and are under his command (Matthew 25:41).
Concerning the Church
The Church is the body of born-again believers, also known as the Bride of Christ. The Church is not just a local body, but is the whole of all Christians. It is a functioning organism (Ephesians 5:23) that has specific duties and jobs to fulfill while waiting for Christ’s return. The head of the Church is Christ and He has given the Church the mission of winning lost souls to Him (Matthew 28:19-20). The Church was given two ordinances to observe; Baptism (Matthew 28:19-20) and The Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 11:23-32). The Church is to meet together and have fellowship with one another (Hebrews 10:25). By example, the Church meets on The Lord’s Day (Sunday) since the first day of the week is the day that the New Testament Church met on (John 20:19; Acts 20:7).
Concerning End Times
We believe that Christ is going to return for His Bride prior to the tribulation period and at that time, the dead in Christ will experience a bodily resurrection and meet Christ in the air and those Christians alive will meet with them (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). After this happens, the world will go through a tribulation period of seven years. The first three and a half years will be false peace and prosperity, but the last three and a half will be judged with death, destruction, and ultimately Armageddon (Revelation 16:16). There will be a millennial reign of Christ and His Bride on earth (Revelation 20:6). All will be judged in the end. Christians will be judged at the judgment seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10) and sinners will be judged at the great white throne judgment (Revelation 20:11-15). It is urgent that all be prepared for the Day of Judgment.
